Museum sales – debate on a dilemma

Champagnes of the highest creed

We associate Champagne with the beginning of something pleasant. It is a cause for joy and signifies class and extravagance.

All the wines in this catalogue offer the essence of quality and excellence. They are Champagnes of the highest creed and have all been crafted and handled with almost excessive personal care and dedication.

We are proud to present such a wide selection of exquisite Champagnes.

Prestige

The quality of Champagne is defined by its cuvée and each house has its own selection of cuvées. The top cuvées carry many different names. Some refer to family members or specific vineyards while others are named after historic figures.

Dom Perignon

The arguably most prestigious cuvée, Dom Perignon, is named after the person who is believed to have invented Champagne, namely a blind monk and cellar master at the Abbey of Hautvillers whose red wine according to legend accidentally underwent secondary bottle fermentation. This was nevertheless a stroke of luck since it marked the beginning of what we today know as Champagne – a product that has since been refined to perfection.

Cristal

In 1876, Tsar Alexander II of Russia ordered his Champagne to be delivered in crystal bottles, hence the name. At the time, Champagne from Louis Roederer was sweet and it was tapped in pure-crystal bottles. Today’s most prestigious cuvée Champagne, it is marketed in clear bottles to reflect the signature crystal bottles of bygone days.

To many, Cristal is the best of Champagnes and when it comes to the rosé version, there is little doubt of its superior excellence.

Krug

When you say Krug you also say elegance, finesse, style and distinction. The Grande Cuvée from Krug is a blend of 10 different vintages. Unlike regular basic cuvées, Krug’s Grand Cuvée is known to keep for many years. Note the classic magnum bottles on auction.

Vintage wines and Collection versions are two other prestigious wines from Krug, which are only made using the best vintages and released many years after the grape harvest.

Clos du Mesnil has been the crown jewel of the House of Krug since its first 1979 vintage. Only 12 vintages have been released so far and today enjoy the status as reference wines for a whole world of winemaking. Clos du Mesnil is a Blanc de Blanc and a true masterpiece in a bottle.

”If the opportunity arises, never miss the chance to drink a Krug!”
(Quote: Richard Juhlin: ”4000 Champagnes”, 2004)
