It is time for yet another tremendous auction of watches and jewellery at Bruun Rasmussen.

The auction in May displays a parade of world class designer watches, including a truly exceptional Patek Philippe gentleman’s wristwatch in 18 ct. gold, model Ref. 5146. Patek Philippe is one the finest and most prestigious watchmakers in the world. Founded in 1839 by Antoine Norbert de Patek and Francois Czapek, the company has a long and fascinating history. The original name of the company was Patek, Czapek & Co., but it assumed its present name in 1851 when Jean Adrien Philippe became co-owner.

In 1868 Patek Philippe introduced the world’s first wristwatch, just as they are the makers behind the Caliber 89 – the world’s most complicated watch, designed in 1989 and made in only four specimens on the occasion of the company’s 150th anniversary. Each watch is subjected to a process of quality control that takes two to four weeks. This is the reason why Patek Philippe only makes 30,000 watches annually. The model Ref. 5146 with moon phases and annual calendar with day, week and month, is one of Patek Philippe’s favourites. The 39 millimetre case of the watch is slightly bigger than other watches and thus more pronounced in its design. 80 of the 100 most expensive watches ever sold at an auction have been made by Patek Philippe.

In addition to watches from Cartier, Boucheron, Chopard, Chaumet and other makers, the auction includes a fabulous Jahan brilliant wristwatch in 18 ct. rose gold, model “Trilogia de Jahan” with three time zones and a Rolex Oyster brilliant lady’s wristwatch.

In the jewellery showcase, the altogether superb diamond bracelet adorned with 13 cabochon-cut azure turquoises sets the standard for the jewellery section of the auction. The name of the turquoise dates back to the France of the 13th century where it was known as “pierre turquoise”, but this kind of stone has been mined in Persia for more than five millennia. The turquoise comes in all shades of blue, almost bordering on green. The azure variant is the most coveted and stones without matrix (veins) are the most precious. The auction also includes several gorgeous pendants, e.g. a big cabochon-cut sapphire and diamond pendant in 18 ct. white gold, an emerald and diamond pendant in 14 ct. white gold and a big cocktail diamond ring from the 1950’s.

The roaring twenties are also set free and allowed to make their mark upon the auction in the month of May where a diamond bracelet in platinum, adorned with no fewer than 304 diamonds will come under the hammer. Platinum was the new luxury metal, and in this bracelet it is combined with the tight geometrical forms that are so characteristic of the elegant and sophisticated style of Art Deco. Paris was trendsetting for the modern style - le style moderne - which was known as art deco following the exhibition “Exposition Internationale des Art Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes” held in Paris in 1925. The circle, the triangle, the quadrangle and the arc dominated the jewellery of the 1920’s and 1930’s - as is evident in this auction’s Art Deco emerald and diamond ring. In its streamlined forms, this style reflected the modern times, the age of the machine and the metropolis and the new conditions of life.
